Magnetic curtain closures solve three different problems: keeping two curtain panels closed, holding curtains open to the side, and keeping a light hem from blowing around. Buyers often search for “curtain magnets” and get a mix of all three, which makes sourcing harder than it needs to be. This guide separates the three jobs, explains which hardware suits each one, and lists what curtain brands, workrooms and online sellers should check before ordering.
Richarms is a magnetic hardware factory in Foshan, China. Our curtain range focuses mainly on closing the light gap between panels, with tiebacks and weights for the other two jobs.
Three jobs, three kinds of magnetic curtain closures
- Keep closed. Magnets on the leading edges of two panels pull them together so light does not come through the middle. This is the most common reason buyers look for curtain magnets.
- Hold open. A magnetic tieback wraps around the gathered curtain and its two ends snap together, so no hook or wall drilling is needed.
- Weigh down. Small magnetic weights clamp the hem from both sides so a shower curtain or sheer hangs straight.
Decide which job you are solving first. A tieback will not seal a light gap, and a closure magnet will not stop a hem from moving.
Keeping curtains closed: push-pin and clip-on magnets
Light-gap closures sit on the leading edge of each panel. When the curtain is drawn, the magnets meet and hold the panels together. There are two practical ways to attach them without sewing.
Push-pin magnets
A pin passes through the curtain fabric and locks into a magnetic cap. The result is small and neat on the curtain face, and the magnet can be pulled off when the curtain is washed. Our removable push-pin curtain magnets come in 17 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm, with long and short pins for different fabric thicknesses.
They are made in two configurations:
- Double-magnet pairs for center-opening curtains, where both panels carry a magnet.
- Single magnet with a metal plate for single-panel curtains and shower curtains, where the curtain edge should hold against a wall or frame.
Clip-on magnets
A clip grips the curtain edge by pressure, so the fabric is not pierced. The clip opening is adjusted to suit the fabric. Our clip-on curtain magnets come in horizontal and vertical styles. For tote-style edges and other textiles, the clamp-on magnetic clip works on the same no-sew principle.
Push-pin or clip-on?
Choose push-pin magnets when you want a small, flat look on the curtain face. Choose clip-on magnets when the fabric must not be pierced or when the closure needs to move often. We compare the two in more detail in How to Match Curtain Magnets to Fabric Thickness.
Holding curtains open: magnetic tiebacks
A magnetic tieback is a decorative cord, string of beads or ring with a magnet in each end. It is wrapped around the curtain and the ends snap together. Because the end pieces are visible, tiebacks are chosen as much for style as for function.
Notre magnetic curtain tiebacks include cord styles with ball or decorative ends, pearl styles and wooden rings. For brands planning their own range, see Custom Magnetic Curtain Tiebacks: Styles, Cord Lengths and OEM Options.
Weighing curtains down: magnetic curtain weights
Magnetic weights are pairs of magnetic parts that clamp the hem from both sides. They are used on shower curtains to stop the curtain from moving toward the body, and on sheers and light curtains that move in a draft. Our magnetic curtain weights can be removed before the curtain is washed.
Workrooms that prefer to hide the weight inside a hem pocket can use plain cylinder magnets instead.
What to check before ordering
- The job. Keep closed, hold open, or weigh down.
- Curtain layout. Center-opening, single panel, or shower curtain.
- Fabric. Sheer, standard or thick blackout. Send a fabric sample if you can.
- Attachment. Push-pin (pierces the fabric) or clip-on (does not).
- Size and number. Larger diameters give a larger contact area; tall curtains usually need more than one set along the edge.
- Room. Bedroom, living room or bathroom. Our closure magnets are intended for long-term bathroom use.
- Branding and packaging. Logo on the cap, retail bags, sets per bag.
- Quantity and timing. Standard items in standard finishes have no minimum order; custom logos, finishes and packaging are quoted per project.
Common questions about magnetic curtain closures
Do magnetic curtain closures stop all light?
They close the gap where the panels meet, which is where most light usually gets through. Light can still come around the sides or top of the curtain, depending on how it is hung.
Can the magnets stay on in the washing machine?
No. Our curtain magnets are designed to be removed. Take them off before washing and put them back afterwards.
Can they be used in a bathroom?
Yes. The push-pin and clip-on closures are used on shower curtains and are intended for long-term use in bathrooms. See Shower Curtain Magnets for Humid Bathrooms for placement tips.
Can you add our logo?
Yes. A logo can be added to the cap of the push-pin magnets for orders from 1,000 pcs, and retail-ready packaging is available.
