Magnetic name tags let staff wear a badge without pushing a pin through their uniform. A magnet unit sits on the back of the badge, a steel plate goes inside the garment, and the fabric is held between the two. For hotels, clinics, retail chains and event teams, that means fewer holes in shirts and faster badge changes between shifts.

Richarms supplies both finished magnetic name badges そして separate magnet backs for badge makers who print or engrave their own badge faces. This guide explains how the parts work, which option fits which buyer, and what to include in a request for quotation.

How a magnetic name tag works

Every magnetic name tag has two parts:

  • The magnet unit. It is fixed to the back of the badge, usually with self-adhesive tape. Bar-style units carry two or three magnets; round units carry one.
  • The back plate. A steel plate that the wearer places inside the garment. The magnets attract the plate through the fabric and hold the badge in place.

Because nothing pierces the cloth, the same badge can move between a shirt, a blouse and a jacket. How well it holds depends on the magnets, the plate and the thickness of the fabric between them, so the right combination should be checked on the actual uniform.

Magnet back styles we supply

Our bar-style backs come in several lengths, including 13 × 45 mm, 13 × 46 mm and 14 × 60 mm. You can choose:

  • Two exposed magnets on a bar.
  • Three exposed magnets on a bar.
  • Three magnets in a plastic cover, available in black, blue or green. The cover is marked with a magnetic-device caution for pacemaker users.

For round badges and pin-style badges, we also make round magnetic fasteners in 17 mm, 20 mm and 23 mm sizes.

Back plates are available plain or with an anti-slip surface. Bar plates can have a textured face, and round plates can have raised dots, both of which help reduce sliding on smooth fabrics.

Matching the magnet to the garment

A badge that holds well on a thin shirt may slide on a thick knit jacket, and a badge that is very strong may pull a light blouse out of shape. Instead of quoting one holding value for every garment, we customize the magnet count, magnet size and magnetic strength to the clothing you specify.

To help us choose:

  1. Tell us which garments the badge will be worn on, and send a fabric sample if possible.
  2. Give the badge size and weight, or send a sample badge.
  3. Test the sample set on the real uniform, including any layers such as a lining or pocket.
  4. Approve the sample that holds well without distorting the fabric, and keep it as the reference for production.

Adhesive backing

The magnet unit is fixed to the badge with self-adhesive tape. The right tape depends on the badge material (metal, plastic or acrylic) and the surface finish, so we select the tape type to suit your badges and your requirements. If your program already specifies a tape, include it in your RFQ.

Wearer safety and nickel

Magnetic badges are not suitable for everyone. People with a pacemaker or another implanted medical device should follow their doctor’s advice and may need a pin or clip badge instead. Our plastic-covered backs carry a printed caution for this reason, and many programs offer a non-magnetic alternative to staff who need one.

Loose back plates and magnets are small parts, so keep spare parts away from young children.

Plated metal parts touch clothing and sometimes skin. Richarms has nickel release test reports for selected plated metal parts we produce. Ask us for the reports that match your materials, and tell us which market and standard your badges must meet so that we can plan testing for your project.

Frequently asked questions

Do magnetic name tags damage clothing?

They do not need a pin hole, which is the main reason programs switch to them. Check the sample on delicate fabrics, because a very strong set can press or pull light cloth.

Can you supply only the magnet backs?

Yes. We supply magnet backs and plates separately for badge makers, as well as finished badges.

Will the badge hold on a thick jacket?

That depends on the fabric thickness and the badge weight. We adjust the magnet count, size and strength to the garments you specify, and you should confirm the hold on samples.

Can people with pacemakers wear magnetic badges?

They should follow their doctor’s advice. Many programs give these staff a pin or clip badge instead.

Request a sample set

Send your badge drawing or sample, the garments it will be worn on and your quantity to info@richarms.com. We will recommend a magnet back and plate combination and arrange samples.
