The most common complaint about curtain magnets is simple: they do not stay closed on thick curtains. In most cases the magnet is not the problem. The attachment does not suit the fabric thickness, or the magnets are placed in the wrong spot. This guide explains how to choose curtain magnets for thick curtains, using the two adjustments our closures offer: pin length and clip opening.

Why thick curtains are harder to close

Blackout, lined and heavy decorative curtains add two challenges. First, the attachment has to hold more fabric, so a fitting made for a sheer may not seat properly. Second, heavy panels pull away from each other more strongly, so the closure has to hold against more weight. Matching the fitting to the fabric solves the first problem; choosing the right size and number of magnets helps with the second.

Option 1: push-pin magnets with the right pin length

우리의 removable push-pin curtain magnets use a pin that passes through the fabric and locks into the magnetic cap. The pin comes in two lengths:

  • Short pin for sheers and thin curtains, so the magnet sits close to the fabric.
  • Long pin for thicker blackout or lined curtains, so the pin reaches through all the layers and still locks.

If the cap does not lock fully, the pin is too short for the fabric. If the magnet wobbles on a thin curtain, try the short pin.

Option 2: clip-on magnets with an adjusted opening

우리의 clip-on curtain magnets grip the curtain edge by pressure. The clip opening is adjusted to the fabric: narrower for sheers, wider for thick curtains. A clip that is too loose will slide down the edge; a clip that is too tight is hard to fit and may mark delicate fabric. Clip-on magnets suit curtains that must not be pierced.

Size, number and placement for thick curtains

  • Size. Larger diameters give a larger contact area. For heavy panels, start with 20 mm or 25 mm push-pin magnets.
  • Number. Use more than one set along the edge of tall or heavy curtains, so the panels stay together from top to bottom.
  • Placement. Fixing the magnets slightly in from the leading edge, on a fold of the curtain, can help the panels overlap and close the gap. Test on the actual curtain before fixing several sets.
  • Configuration. For center-opening curtains use double-magnet pairs. For a single panel that should hold against a wall or frame, use a single magnet with a metal plate.

Test before you order in bulk

Fabric weight, lining and how the curtain is hung all affect the result. Order samples, fit them to the actual curtain, and open and close the curtain several times. Check that the fitting stays in place and the panels stay together. If you send us a fabric sample, we can suggest a pin length or clip style before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Which curtain magnets are best for thick curtains?

Push-pin magnets with the long pin, or clip-on magnets with the opening adjusted wider. Choose push-pin for a neater look and clip-on if the fabric must not be pierced.

Why do my curtain magnets keep falling off?

Usually the fitting does not match the fabric: the pin is too short to lock or the clip is too loose. Check the fit first, then the size and number of magnets.

Can I use the same magnets on sheers and blackout curtains?

Often yes, with the right pin length or clip setting for each fabric. Test both curtains before ordering.
